Transport, Maintenance and Qualification of Portable qPCR Equipment

Portable equipment still needs controlled handling. Protect the instrument in transit, run measurements on a stable surface and distinguish a routine instrument check from documented calibration or performance qualification.

Transport the instrument; keep the measurement stationary

MICBUSTERS technical guidance describes an instrument without moving mechanical parts and designed for portable use. That does not make every component immune to shocks, temperature extremes or liquid contamination. Use the recommended case and handling instructions.

Complete reaction setup and run the instrument without moving it. Movement can contribute to bubbles or changing tube conditions and makes the working environment harder to control. Keep the unit level and stable, with the ventilation and ambient conditions required by its instructions.

Check the setup after arrival

  • Inspect the case, instrument, power supply and cables for visible damage.
  • Confirm that consumables remained within their storage conditions.
  • Allow equipment to reach suitable working conditions before setup.
  • Check the computer connection, software configuration and file location.
  • Run the prescribed controls and review unexpected changes.
  • Record damage, severe shocks, liquid exposure and performance concerns.

A satisfactory positive control supports a run decision within its scope. It does not independently demonstrate that every well’s temperature accuracy and optical performance meet a formal specification.

Do not confuse automatic checks with formal calibration

The technical guidance refers to automatic calibration during measurement. The precise scope should be confirmed in the current instrument documentation. A run-time adjustment or self-check is different from a traceable calibration report and different again from qualification of the complete method on your samples.

Installation qualification documents that the specified setup is installed. Operational qualification examines defined operating functions. Performance qualification demonstrates fitness for the intended workflow under agreed conditions. Use a written scope, acceptance criteria and records rather than relying on the word “qualified” alone.

Plan service rather than waiting for a failure

The supplied MICBUSTERS guidance recommends yearly maintenance through a local distributor, including decontamination, maintenance and calibration activities as applicable. Confirm the current interval and service scope for your instrument and usage. Heavy use, transport damage or unusual control behavior can justify earlier review.

Contamination usually concerns sample-handling surfaces, consumables or amplified material entering later preparations. It should not automatically be described as an optical-calibration fault. Investigate unexpected positives with blanks and handling records as well as instrument checks.

Arrange local qualification before mobilization

For a Brazil program, coordinate the required equipment service and qualification with MICBUSTERS and Oil Tech Brazil. Agree who performs each activity, which documents are supplied and what customer acceptance requires. A distributor relationship does not by itself establish independent accreditation or a particular qualification scope.

MICBUSTERS can help build an equipment file containing serial number, software version, service history, control records and the procedure used at the asset. This makes the instrument easier to manage across operators and locations.

Frequently asked questions

Does a portable instrument need maintenance?

Yes. Use the current manufacturer service guidance and investigate damage, contamination concerns or unexpected performance promptly.

Is a self-check the same as OQ or PQ?

No. Formal qualification requires a defined scope, acceptance criteria and documented results for the intended use.
