Powering Portable qPCR and Handling an Interrupted Run
The MICBUSTERS portable setup described here uses external power. It has no built-in battery. A reliable power plan protects the measurement; a data file alone cannot guarantee that an interrupted run remains interpretable.

Understand the power arrangement
The technical guidance describes operation through the supplied mains adapter on 120–230 V or an approved 12 V supply, such as a suitable vehicle power arrangement. Confirm the adapter, cable, polarity and power requirements for your instrument before travel. Do not connect an arbitrary 12 V source merely because its nominal voltage matches.
There is no manufacturer-independent answer to “how many runs per battery charge.” That depends on the external battery or power station, its conversion losses, usable capacity, temperature and other connected loads. Verify the proposed setup for a complete representative run before relying on it at a remote site.
Include the computer and connections
The instrument is one part of the working system. Keep the required computer, software and USB connection available throughout the run according to the configuration instructions. Secure cables against accidental disconnection and avoid shared sockets that other site activities may switch off.
Where continuity is important, use a compatible qualified backup-power arrangement. Do not assume an internal UPS is present. If the proposed location is a classified hazardous area, confirm the suitability of the whole setup with the site team; portability is not an explosion-protection rating.
What survives a power interruption?
MICBUSTERS technical guidance states that data generated during the run are stored through the connected USB arrangement and may remain after loss of power. The exact location and recovery behavior depend on the software and configuration. Verify your own save location and do not treat “USB” as proof that every interrupted file is complete or readable.
A saved partial trace is evidence of what was acquired. It is not evidence that the prescribed thermal program completed. Keep the file, note when the interruption occurred and label the run as interrupted pending review.
Decide validity from the method
An interruption early in amplification normally means the planned measurement cannot be completed from that trace. A late interruption can also affect endpoint information, controls or software interpretation. There is no universal last-cycle point after which every result becomes valid.
Review the completed cycles, curve quality, controls and the method’s documented acceptance criteria. If the interrupted run falls outside those criteria, repeat with fresh target tubes and an appropriate retained extract. Do not resume an interrupted tube or combine two partial runs unless the manufacturer explicitly validates that procedure.
A failed run does not always mean a lost sample
The DNA extract can often support more targets or another run, provided sufficient volume remains and storage conditions are met. Reserve extract for repeat testing when planning the panel. If the extract is exhausted, compromised or outside its holding conditions, a new extraction may be needed.
MICBUSTERS can help define the run-failure procedure before your campaign. Record power source, software version, sample IDs and raw-file location so troubleshooting does not depend on an operator’s memory.
Frequently asked questions
How many hours does the built-in battery last?
The configuration described in MICBUSTERS technical guidance has no built-in battery. Runtime must be established for the external power source and complete setup.
Can a nearly completed run always be accepted?
No. A late outage still requires review against the validated method and control criteria; saved data alone are insufficient.
